DAY EXCURSIONS IN ZULULAND

WILDLIFE & CULTURE EXPERIENCE (12 HOURS)
SafariDepart 06H30 for Hluhluwe / Umfolozi Park, the oldest game reserve in South Africa (established in 1895), where the big 5 can be seen.

Hluhluwe is characterized by hills, and thus is a particularly scenic reserve. The area is famous for its wide variety of both bird and animal life and also for their white & black rhino protection programme. You’ll have a chance to view most of the big game species -- lion, elephant, white & black rhinoceros, buffalo, leopard and giraffe.

Enjoy lunch 12H30 at the scenic Hilltop camp. (OWN ACCOUNT). After lunch13H30 depart and visit an authentic and traditional Zulu village called “DumaZulu” meaning the “Thundering Zulu”. The Kraal residents form part of the “Living Museum” and carry out age-old manufacturing traditions including spear, shield and clay pot making, basket weaving, intricate beadwork and Sangoma (traditional healer) bone throwing. The residents strive to authentically capture customs and traditions practiced during the reign of the famous Zulu King Shaka. The cultural experience culminates in spectacular and vibrant Zulu dancing.

Depart the village 17H00 and return to the Richards Bay.


HLUHLUWE / UMFOLOZI HIPPO EXPERIENCE 10 HOURS)

Upon arrival at Memorial Gate, enjoy game viewing in Hluhluwe Game reserve accompanied by your experienced ranger.

Hluhluwe is characterized by hills, and thus is a particularly scenic reserve. The area is famous for its wide variety of both bird and animal life and also for their white & black rhino protection programme. Most of the big game species include lion, elephant, white & black rhinoceros, buffalo, leopard and giraffe.

Enjoy lunch 12H30 at Hilltop Camp (OWN ACCOUNT), situated on the summit of a forested hill and offers fine views of the surrounding countryside. After lunch 13H30 depart for a boat cruise in the Reserve on the Hluhluwe Dam, giving you up-close views of crocodiles, hippopotamus, water birds, in their natural habitat.

Depart the Reserve 15H00 and return to Richards Bay.


SHAKALAND EXPERIENCE (8 HOURS)
SafariDepart 08H30 for Shakaland and experience the essence of Africa; pulsating tribal rhythms, assegai-wielding warriors and the mysterious rituals of the Sangoma interpreting messages form the spirits. Shakaland is beautifully set amongst mountains and rivers and ideally tucked away in an indigenous setting of aloes and mimosa trees overlooking the Umhlatuze Lake.

Originally recreated for the film sets of Shaka Zulu and John Ross, Protea Hotel Shakaland is an unusual cross-cultural center and living museum where Zulu folk pursue the customs and traditions of their forbears.

Observe typical Zulu traditions and captivating ceremonies like beer brewing, spear making, hut building, pottery, weaving, beadwork, courtship and beer drinking, as well as lectures on traditional dress, etiquette and the social structure of a zulu kraal. Discover the secrets of the sangomas, such as tribal dancing and their beer ceremony.

Enjoy a traditional lunch (INCLUDED) at the Protea Hotel Shakaland restaurant whilst being entertained with song, dances and folklore by Zulu dancers in full regalia.(Drinks own account).


BOAT CRUISE ON ST LUCIA WETLANDS PARK - HERITAGE SITE (8 HOURS)
SafariDepart 08H30 for the St Lucia Wetlands Park World Heritage Site. Upon arrival embark on a luxury boat (Bathroom on board) for a 2-hour cruise on the St Lucia Estuary.

The luxurious passenger ferry is custom built to venture into shallow waters and stops at all interesting sightings for best photographic opportunities. A popular sundeck also affords better viewing. Viewing includes hippopotami, crocodiles, and variety of bird species including the African Fish Eagle, heron and kingfisher.

Depart 15H00 and return to Richards Bay


HALF DAY THULA THULA BUSH EXPERIENCE (6 HOURS)
SafariDepart 06H30 for Thula Thula, one of the oldest private Game Reserves in Kwa-Zulu Natal for an exclusive bush experience. This Reserve has a storied past, as it is part of the private hunting grounds of legendary Zulu King Shaka, founder of the Zulu empire. Thula Thula is today an exclusive sanctuary for Africa’s famous wildlife.

On arrival at Thula Thula Private Game Reserve and Safari Lodge you will board your open landrovers with your experienced game ranger and tracker and begin your game drive.

Discover Africa’s famous wildlife including elephant, rhino, leopard, zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, hyena, crocodile, Nyala, kudu and many more. Bird life is abundant with over 300 species, including raptors. The re-introduction of a family herd of elephants from the world-famous Kruger Park in 1999 marked the historic return of these majestic creatures to the area for the first time in nearly 100 years.
Depart 12H00 Thula Thula after your game drive and return to Richards Bay.


HALF DAY DUMAZULU CULTURAL VILLAGE TOUR (6 HOURS)
SafariDepart 08H30 for Dumazulu Village. Meaning the “Thundering Zulu” is located in the heart of Zululand’s Kwa-Zulu Natal region, near Hluhluwe Village and conveniently surrounded by the famous Hluhluwe-Umfolozi, Mkuze and St. Lucia parks (the home of the white rhino).

Dumazulu is the only cultural Kraal (approx 50 residents) in Zululand to have been personally opened by a Zulu King. His majesty, King Goodwill Zwelethini kaBhekuzulu, a direct descendant of King Shaka Zulu, bestowed a great honor upon the Kraal by placing the Royal Zulu seal of approval on the kraal’s authenticity and objectives.

The Kraal residents form part of the “Living Museum” and carry out age-old manufacturing traditions including spear, shield and clay pot making, basket weaving, intricate beadwork and Sangoma (traditional healer) bone throwing. The residents strive to authentically capture customs and traditions practiced during the reign of the famous Zulu King Shaka. The village flows through to the main dining area and bar where visitors can end off their tour enjoying a drink, followed by a visit to the Curio shop. The cultural experience culminates in spectacular and vibrant Zulu dancing.

Depart 13H00 Dumazulu return to Richards Bay.
